India's National Family Health Survey is the country's main evidence on women's health, work, assets, agency and safety. This page pulls any of its indicators live from the DHS Program API, for every state and every round since 1992–93, and shows three things at once: where each state stands, how far it has moved since the previous round, and which women, by wealth, residence, education and age, are behind the average. Nothing here is typed in by hand; every number arrives from the API with its survey and denominator.

The API carries the unweighted sample size but not NFHS's design-based confidence intervals, so the intervals drawn here are Wilson intervals on the unweighted n inflated by this design effect. They are approximate. NFHS state reports publish the real ones.

Each state has a dot for the shown round and, when a comparison round is chosen, a fainter dot for it joined by a line: a dumbbell. The vertical line is the all-India value. Grey whiskers are the approximate 95% intervals described in the sidebar. States are matched across rounds by name after normalising renamings (Orissa to Odisha, Uttaranchal to Uttarakhand, Pondicherry to Puducherry, Delhi to NCT of Delhi); the 2019–21 round has the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh split and the Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu merger, which have no exact match in earlier rounds.

Values of the indicator in the shown round by wealth quintile, residence, education and age group, from the same API call. The gap between the poorest and richest quintile, and between no education and higher education, is often larger than the gap between the best and worst state; that is the point of drawing both.
